Toqueville

Toqueville is located near 5th avenue on 15th street. Really strange since I practically lived right next to the place for a year! It was tough finding it and it seemed really small but once you walk in, it’s a high ceiling place with the air of a fine business dining spot. We had an awesome seat, right under the chandlier with views of the artwork surrounding us. It’s one of those dining experiences most people imagine when you say to a business client, “Let’s go out for lunch.”

Anyway, the food was nothing less of superb. Strangely, as first-time customers and 2 of the youngest diners in the house, the chef made us this little dish of trout in yogurt/lime sauce. It had a texture of tuna, but it was delicious! Best of all, it was complimentary! So that made a good first impression. The appetizer, which was smoked trout on potatoes was also impressive. The presentation of it made you want to savor the eye candy before destroying it. Entrees were the best. I ordered the skate, which probably was the BEST non-asian fish dish I’ve ever ordered (it still doesn’t beat my mom’s homecooked fish). Jon ordered the lamb chop which was probably one of the best lamb chops I’d ever had. It was tender and had a great lamb flavor to it (and no smell!). Dessert wasn’t as good as the other three entrees, but not bad. I had this raspberry sorbet on top of a yogurt scoop with fresh berries. Jon had caramelized bananas on top of dark chocolate covered lady fingers. The chocolate was really bitter/dark.

I also recommend getting the brioch bread there. It’s better than the brioche at Terrace in the Sky. Actually, I just recommend going there, especially for their restaurant week lunch. There’s not much variety on the menu, but it’s great food. Including tax and a 24% tip (we tipped VERY generously for their gracious service), it came out to $31/person. Not too bad for a top end restaurant.
