There’s something about home-made ice cream that makes it superior to ready-made ice cream. Perhaps its the fresh quality or the way it tastes so much lighter than the usual ice cream we eat out of cartons. Sundaes and Cones was one of my favorite ice cream spots when I lived in Greenwhich Village and Union Square. It’s moderately priced, around $3.00 for a small cup (1 scoop) and they have a huge assortment of flavors.
I was really disappointed when I tried their Green-tea ice cream. I remember first having it in a Thai restaurant. The usual Green-tea ice cream you get at most places has a slightly bitter taste but the sweetener masks the bitterness. The Green-tea ice cream here, however, tasted soley of matcha powder. Very little sugar, if any, was added so it had an all around bitter taste.
(Licking away…)
I do recommend the Tiramisu and Mocha though. The Mocha is strong and intense. The Tiramisu has bits of spongy ladyfingers and carries a distinct hint of rum. Both are among my favorites. I think what I love most about the place is its simplicity. The walls are bare white, there’s a small ice cream “bar” by the left hand window where they have tons of magazines, and a few seats. They also have a bunch of fruity flavors and sorbet too, so it’s the ice cream place for picky and all-around ice cream lovers alike.
