This is purely an eye candy post as well as a promotion of HOST UK. I don’t expect you to ever come near within even 10 miles of this pub since it’s literally in the middle of nowhere. I had the opportunity to visit Sudbury, Essex when I participated in the HOST UK program. My hosts (Liz and Tony) took me out to eat and the first place we went to was their favorite pub, The Pheasant.
My hosts are regulars at this place. They told me they come every month and I can see why. It was hands down the best pub I went to in Britain. If you can imagine the homey feeling you get at a bed and breakfast, that was the feeling I had at The Pheasant. The servers and the customers all know each other because they’ve developed such a loyal fan base.
Tony recommended the Venison as an entree. Seeing as I’ve never had Venison (deer), I jumped at it. It came in this creamy mushroom sauce topped with bacon bits and sides of broccoli, string beans and chips. The meat was a bit tough and the knife wasn’t too sharp, but after I got a new knife, it was the ultimate venison experience.
For dessert, we got the Strawberry-Raspberry Pavlova, which actually wasn’t on the menu, but only available by request. Liz recommended it so we each got one. A Pavlova is a meringue with cream. I loved the crunch the spoon made as I dug in for the first bite. The meringue melts into your mouth and distinegretes while the cream lingers. The fruit was a wonderful compliment. Seriously, you can’t ask for anything better.
As I have no clue how I even got to the pub (a bunch of winding roads), I can’t really tell you where it is. But it’s an old pub, well established, and well liked by the locals so if you do somehow find yourself in Sudbury, then you know where to grab a bite.
(See, it really is in the middle of no where)
