Coogee Beach

Unknowingly, I told people that I lived in Sydney, which is a political error. I actually live in Coogee, a suburb on the eastern side of Sydney. I live about a 7 minute walk away from the beach. The first time I saw the beach was when I was riding in a car from the airport. The water seemed dirty and dark. That afternoon, I returned back to the beach and as the sun’s rays penetrated into the water, the color turned into an exuberant turquoise blue color.

The water is so clear when you look down from the rocks. When you’re directly on the shore, the aquamarine water gathers sand and turns into a sandy brown as the waves crash onto the shore. I love the feeling you get when you’re standing barefoot on the sand, and as the waves retreat, the sand from underneath your feet collapses and slides down.

There’s a pathway from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach (north from Coogee) thats approximately 6 kilometers. We walked along part of it and even that took a good 2 hours back and forth. Most people go to Bondi to surf because Coogee has “dump” waves. Coogee is one of the safest oceans since the tides are calm. There’s always a few people doing laps back and forth in the morning.

Yesterday morning, we woke up at 5am to catch the sunrise. We left around 6am, which was a bit early, but we got to see the sky turn from navy to baby blue. The strangest thing about sunrise here is that it gets light a good 20 minutes before the sun actually comes out. When the sun started coming out from the horizon, it was a tiny speck. Minute by minute, other orange specks began appearing between the clouds until finally, the glorious sun arose. It was an exhilarating experience.
