Sometimes, the most spontaneous decisions turn out to be the best decisions. Angela and I decided to book a weekend trip to Tasmania last minute. Because we only had 2 days, we wanted to get our bang for our buck and looked up tours that’d take us around the island. We found Peppermint Bay Cruise, a company that takes you on a cruise for 5 hours along the Derwent River all while providing a full regional lunch.
The cruise was spectacular. We stopped along Peppermint Bay for an hour and got to explore for a bit. We also saw sea lions directly next to the boat, viewed marine life through the underwater camera, visited the second largest salmon farm in the region, and cruised along under the Tasman bridge. It was totally gorgeous and an experience like no other.
The lunch they provided wowed us. They give you a box of a sample of the best regional foods. We had a raw oyster, smoked salmon, tomato chutney, free-range chicken, bacon/pork terrine, chicken liver spread (yuck, but Angela enjoyed), local bread, and this creamy fruity dessert. I believe that everything was grown locally. In fact, they prepared the boxes when we got onto the cruise.
We also bought some Tasmanian ice cream. I didn’t particularly love it, but it was still good. Tasmanian ice cream is not at all like gelato or even regular ice cream. It reminded us of sorbet, even though we got the Chocolate-Hazelnut. It felt a bit gritty and icy.
I wholeheartedly recommend this cruise if you decide to visit Hobart. Each of us paid $88 for a window seat and it was the experience of a lifetime.
