Ramen Setagaya

Ramen is this sort of food that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. For me, it’s the only soupy type of meal that I’ll tolerate. I love having a hot spicy bowl of ramen whenever it snows or rains on a cold wintry day. Don’t ask me why; it’s just the way it is.

Patrick came to visit and I thought that we should break away from Soba Ya. Ramen Setagaya came highly recommended by a friend who swore by its deliciousness. And indeed it was delicious although I was a bit disappointed by the lack of variety on the menu. It’s all just simple, salty ramen with a couple of variations. Nevertheless, the broth is indeed flavorful and I must admit that I snuck in a sip or two here and there.

If I had to compare this to Ippudo, I’d have to say that while I thoroughly enjoyed Ramen Setagaya’s noodles, I’d prefer the variety that Ippudo offers. The noodles don’t come spicy although there’s hot sauce that you can add yourself to the broth. Ippudo, on the other hand, offers a spicy alternative. Ramen Setagaya is a bit cheaper because of its simplicity and unlike Ippudo, it’s small and you sit on long tables that accomdate several parties. The ambiance of Ippudo is a bit more posh (in the ramen realm, that is) and their one and only location makes it the exclusive hang out spot for ramen fans alike during Thursday and Friday nights.

The difference between Shio Ramen and Shio Chasyumen is that the former gives you extra pork. Also, remember that “Tsuke-men” means cold noodles, so take heed when you decide to experiment on a menu that is quite foreign.

And, there are several locations in NYC to satisfy your ramen cravings. The address below is the one that I went to.
