Corner Cafe Shop

When Jungyon told me that she was coming back from Paris for a week, I immediately wanted to get a date set up for our “London” reunion. With the exception of Jungyon, all five of us were in New York City this semester and we had been meaning to get together soon anyway. Her brief visit back just made it an excuse to schedule a meal sometime in the mist of midterms.

Anyway, it didn’t even matter because two people couldn’t make it after all (as you can see from above). But those of us who did make it unanimously agreed that brunch was amazing. The cookie goes to Krystal, who provided us with a comprehensive list of “must-go-to” brunch spots in the city. We ended up picking the Corner Cafe Shop because it’s literally about three blocks down from NYU.

But I have to admit- what really drew me to this cafe was their Creme Brulee dipped French Toast. I mean, come on. How can you keep a dry mouth when reading that description? It’s like the Brangelina twins hitting the gene jackpot (although I’m aware this analogy can completely backfire, but we won’t know for a few years now, will we?). So, Steff and I ended up getting the French Toast, Krystal the Marinated Portobello Mushroom Burger, and Jungyon the Eggs Benedicts.

Of course, the French Toast was delicious! I could only taste a slight hint of the Creme Brulee, which in retrospect, is good because Creme Brulee can be quite overwhelming especially with the heaviness of the cream and all. I’ve mentioned this before, but I have terrible tastebuds, which is why everything tastes good to me. If you had blindfolded me, I probably wouldn’t have been able to point out the Creme Brulee flavor within the first couple of guesses. But at the end, it’s really enjoying the food above all that matters most!

I do have to admit, when Krystal got her burger, I almost wanted to change my order. The thing was huge! The bun was one giant brown dome that engulfed the portobello and to the side was this massive order of fries. I don’t even think I need to tell you how delicious those fries were. Shoelace string fries are the best when made properly- crunchy on the outside and just soft enough on the inside. But I guess how all good fries should be made. Even the ketchup was good… Definitely an in-house recipe.

Jungyon’s eggs benedict looked awesome too. I had a bite and it was delish. And I don’t really even like eggs benedict!

On the weekends, the place is jammed packed during brunch. We went around 11am, so it was still fairly quiet for a Saturday. They don’t accept reservations for brunch, but it’s definitely worth getting up early for! The prices are also decent too; you’ll probably get away with spending around $15 if you order a coffee and brunch dish.
