AJ Maxwell’s

It’s not everyday that I would drop nearly $100 on a meal for two, but it’s not everyday that you graduate from college either. Restaurant.com had an 80% off promotion where I was able to get a $50 off coupon for only $4! But even with the discount, I think I ended up paying over $100 including tip.

Ranked among the top 10 steakhouses in the nation, I figured I was going to have a fantasmic culinary experience. At $47 a piece for a porterhouse steak, I expected it to come diamond encrusted or something. But no, it came with complimentary plating service, which for me, was way over the top. As if I can’t serve myself and need someone to arrange steak on a plate for me!

So this is what a Porterhouse for 2 looks like. It comes only with the steak, so we ordered the 3 sides for $21 (otherwise, they’re $10 each). Since Sabrina can’t stand cheese, that eliminated like 80% of the sides. We got the hash browns, brussels sprouts (without the cheese), and sauteed mushrooms. The mushrooms were by far the best, the hash browns were WAY too oily, and the brussels sprouts were a bit too charred.

The steak, of course, while tender, juicy, and flavorsome, was not worth $47 a piece. Maybe I ate too much bread and too much of the sides, but Sabrina and I couldn’t even finish it! It’s alot of meat when you think about it…

(Thank you Wikipedia for your knowledge and image)

But what is a Porterhouse steak? Ah ha! Now we get to the crux of why it’s so darn expensive! If you look on the diagram above, two parts are highlighted- the short loin and tenderloin. Together, they form a “T” which is why the Porterhouse is also called the T-Bone steak. Each cow can only produce one Porterhouse, hence the hefty price tag. The meat next to the bone is very tender. The larger side is the strip loin and the smaller tenderloin. But yes, when cooked properly, it is quite delicious.

But $150 of deliciousness (pre-coupon)? Well, thats for you to decide.

And random strangers decided to jump into our picture near AJ Maxwell’s…

Hi Jessie,
I was there about 2 weeks ago. You were right….too much meat! But the sauteed mushrooms were really good. We had beer battered onion rings, creamed spinach, and sauteed mushrooms, and I had the fillet mignon. I brought home 1/2 of the fillet mignon and ate it for 3 days :(
