Penelope

If all restaurants could strive to be like Penelope, then the food world would be a much better place. I obviously value service and food quality, but I think that too many restaurants out there are too pretentious about it. Like, why can’t quality service come from the heart rather than just uniforms and ettiquette? Honestly, with the exception of Paprika, Penelope was one of the rare places where I felt everything was just so genuine. Even the menu felt down to earth, if such a thing is even possible.

We came here for a family dinner, that is our little AKPsi family. It was really difficult getting a table, but after about 40 minutes, we had menus in front of us. By the time we were halfway through eating our food, it was close to 10pm and the restaurant started emptying out. I didn’t want to disturb everyone with the flash photography since it was so dark, so there’s only a few pictures.

So what do I love about this restaurant?

  • This is real comfort food
  1. Mac and Cheese- I think they use white cheddar, but it’s so hearty and delicious!
  2. Ellie’s Spinach Pie- A bit creamy, but still, very comforting. The filo dough was soooo good!
  3. Argula with Warm Chicken Meatballs- Whoever thought of chicken meatballs is a godsend
  4. Warm Brie and Apple Sandwich- Possibly THE BEST SANDWICH EVER!!
  • The food is really cheap!!! Nearly everything is under $10!
  • When a dish is served with greens, they really give you alot of greens!

Dessert was also amazing. We ordered the red velvet and strawberries with Nutella. Both are very simple yet so fulfilling. That’s what I love about comfort food. It doesn’t have to be fancy as long as it hits the spot. But yes, if I were to go back, I’d order the same two desserts again.

It’s really dimly lit- actually it feels as if it’s only lit by candles. It’d be a beautiful spot for a romantic date although it can get a bit loud. But with such great food, I think it’s worth the tradeoff.
