I think one of the many things that I’ll miss next semester is the dorm events where they take you out to eat and then see a Broadway show. They appropriate about $10 per head at each dorm, so Gramercy Green, which has a good sizable amount of inhabitants, was able to throw some pretty sick events. I was able to see two Broadway shows within a week and only needed to pay an insignificant co-pay. Now now, if you’re not an NYU student, don’t judge. Our rent is ridiculous. It’s like $6400 for a semester! (what blasphemy). For what we’re paying, they should take us out to dinner every week! At least they took us to Tony’s Di Napoli in Time Square right before we went to go see Hair.
There were like 10 of us, and the only two guys were part of the faculty who brought us to dinner. Everything is family size portioned. Even with the 10 of us, one person completely did not eat (she didn’t touch any of the appetizers and had tomatoes and lettuce for dinner…) and two girls were so concerned about their weight that they delicately picked strands of pasta that strayed away from cream or cheese. That obviously didn’t leave them with many choices. So, really, what we had was like 7 people eating ginormous amounts of food.
We had 4 appetizers – House Salad, Zucchini Fritti, Mozzarella Balls with Brushetta, and Stuffed Mushrooms with Baked Clams. My personal favorites were the salad and the stuffed mushrooms. The salad was drenched in this olive oil based sauce and had such a divine scent to it. The stuffed mushrooms were juicy, tender, and so full of flavor! The zucchini chips were also delish, but they got a bit heavy (greasy) after a bit.
Near the end of round 1, we were stuffed. Like, I should have stopped right there. But then round 2 rolled out and there were 4 more dishes- Spaghetti and Meatballs, Fettucini Alfredo, Chicken Parm, and Eggplant Parm. I think the chicken was the favorite because that was the only dish we managed to finish at the end of the course.
When the fettucini came out, everyone was eyeing it but ironically, we were only to make a mere dent in it. It was just so heavy and creamy that you could only handle so much. And to be honest, it was kinda bland. Like whatever happened to the Parmesan cheese???
(See how much food we still had left?!)
But I think the most epic part of the meal was dessert. The man ordered 2 giant cakes. Actually, they were more like ice cream sandwiches. One chocolate and one strawberry shortcake. I thought I’d really like the chocolate, but I ended up liking the strawberry more.
At this point, you could imagine those weight-concerned girls. They only limited themselves to one slice. The two girls on either side of me and myself dug into both slices. We happily demolished the strawberry shortcake without showing any mercy.
I’m not going to lie- in retrospect, this looks a bit disgusting…
But in all, a solid family-style Italian restaurant at decent prices. I came here during freshman year of high school for Rona’s birthday and I’d come again!
