I want to start off by saying that alot of the restaurants that do well in the city aren’t necessarily great. They offer decent food, but often, it’s the ambiance that can break or make a restaurant. Spice is probably one of those places where the food is “eh” but the dining “experience” makes up for the “ehness.” In fact, it was such a popular spot that it had to expand to a newer location. Now it’s located near Union Square, but it used to be on University and 10th.
There are a ton of Thai restaurants in the area and most of them offer the same, if not better food. But the good thing about Spice is that they do offer a nice little lunch deal where you can get a side and an entree for $10. Popular appetizers are the steamed dumpings, crispy spring rolls, and shrimp fritter, which are shown above.
But whatever you do, don’t get what I got. I don’t even remember what it was called. It was minced chicken, lettuce, and cabbage/carrots. It was terrible.
I ordered the black noodle, which are just rice noodles with a black sauce topped with broccoli, onion, chicken, and cilantro. It was okay, but I’ve definitely had better (at a cheaper price). Angela remained conservative with her Pad Thai. She said it was delicious, but she never complains. So I’m not sure how much you should trust her on that. But Janice and Steph thought their fried rice was also delicious. Maybe I’m just picky?
(That’s a bit too orange, don’t you think?)
It’s not my favorite place to go, but I guess, if you must, you might as well check it out sooner or later. Afterall, it is considered one of the more “hip” Thai places to dine at.
