Boyd Thai

by Jessie on July 28, 2009

really.savory-bites.com came silently into the world today. Maybe a bit too silent because it’s still being linked to this blog, but no fear! It’ll be up and running soon… hopefully.

That blog is at the mercy of my good friend, Anthony, who loves everything Thai- food, girls… He wanted to start up a Thai blog and I reckoned that he could make a good one with all of the Thai restaurants in New York City. I wanted the blog to be named boy.thai.savory-bites.com, but nobody would get it, that is unless if you’re reading this post right now.

So that’s Anthony up there and he’s a dork, really. He’s not only obsessed with Thai food, but with a particular Thai restaurant near NYU. We went there once on an ISP group break (I think we spent like 9 hours that day working on our presentation?) for dinner and while I would have been happy ordering from another Thai restaurant closer by a few hundred feet, Anthony wouldn’t have been. In fact, he’s gone to Boyd Thai so many times that he knows all the servers and owner by name. And that means perks. He’s gotten everything from free desserts to drinks to appetizers. But enough about that, more on the food right now.

(Summer roll with shrimp dumpling and salad- All part of the Early Bird special)

Boyd Thai has a long long menu, and their strength lies in their seafood. For the average Thai restaurant, it’s not cheap unless if you go for the Early Bird special.  Taken from Menupages.com…

“4 Pm To 7 Pm Come With Salad, Summer Roll And Shrimp Dumpling Or Soup (Tom Yum Or Tom Kha). Choice of Chicken, Vegetables or Tofu $10.95/Choice of Shrimp, Beef, Squid, Veggie Duck, Smoked Sausage or Mussels $11.95/ Choice of Catfish, Scallops, Salmon, Soft Shell Crab or Duck $12.95″

And that, I’ll say, is pretty darn cheap.

But seeing as how I had already gotten pizza with Trevor only a couple of hours prior to (post coming up soon, I swear), and furthermore was looking at a 3 course dinner at Perry St with Jungyon & Krystal within the next two hours (yes, post defnitely coming up…), I couldn’t do it. Stomach expansion just isn’t a forte anymore, so I cowered in shame by ordering a salad app.

This isn’t always on their menu, but their soft-shelled crab salad with pineapple and cashews topped with a spicy pomegrate vinegrette is pretty darn awesome. Except the sauce is really really spicy (and Angela will atest- I can handle the heat) and a bit too salty. But despite all that, the soft shell is perfect in every way. It crunches where it’s supposed to and then magically melts in your mouth. I think I’m starting to like shellfish now, well some…

And Anthony got his favorite- drunken noodles with ground beef. Quite tasty, I’ll admit, and very reminiscent of the way my mom used to make it. A bit salty, but otherwise, recommended.

Here’s where the perks kicked in- free dessert! You really do have a separate stomach for dessert because I was really stuffed. But there it was- Creme Brulee using green custard with fresh berries and whipped cream. I’ll always love how the burnt sugar succumbs and gives way to the pressure of the spoon. A crunch and then soft luffiness. Dessert was devine and although we had each initially said that we would have a spoonful, we didn’t quite ahear to that.

But yeah, definitely share. Creme Brulee after an Early Bird special might be a tad bit heavy, even if it doesn’t look like much.

And if you do come, keep a look out for Anthony. Chances are, he’ll be there.
