I must honestly be missing something because even after 48 hours, I still can’t fathom why everyone’s raving about ChikaLicious. How do people stand outside and wait minutes on end for this?!
Maybe it’s because I’m one of those types where if you plop a giant sundae dripping with fudge and falling walnuts, I’m a happy camper. So no, I wasn’t satisfied about getting served portions that even a baby would find skimpy in a bite. No, I wasn’t satisfied about the lack of flair and finesse I expected at a “dessert bar.” And what the heck is a dessert bar!? Just because you have a bar-like arrangement in your restaurant…
The pre-fix starts you off with an Amuse, shown above. That’s literally 1/3 tablespoon of Yogurt Panna Cotta topped with Pineapple and Mango. Wish they would have given a full tablespoon…
The Triple Berries with Lemon-mint Sorbet sounded so divine, but:
- Lemon-mint sorbet is perhaps the most atrocious combination for sorbet. Maybe they didn’t do it right because it just tasted wrong…
- I hate floral plates, but I guess that’s not the point. However, the perception of putting two tiny bite sized portions onto a giant dish isn’t the most ingenious idea.
(Incidentally, I’ve forgotten what that bed of crunchy sweetness is called. Starts with a “K” and is made out of filo dough)
(Presentation does look good, though, I must say)
Sabrina made me get the Fromage Cheesecake, although to her credit, the “chef” did say that it was the best dessert on the menu. Served on top of chopped ice, it looks like one giant scoop of vanilla ice cream. The countless tiny indentations created by the cheesecloth are hidden by a generous tablespoonful of pure cream. Unnecessary in my opinion, but…
Not going to lie- loved the cheesecake.
- Perfect size. Any additional bite would probably give you a heart attack
- Most intriguing cheesecake ever. It’s fluffy, light, and even airy. It’s got this sweet melted-ice cream sort of taste, actually.
But the Petit fours were shameful. A Chocolate Truffle, Shredded Coconut Coated Marshmallow, and Orange Shortbread Cookie? Seriously! I could have popped them out of my oven.
Definitely not worth the $14 (set pre-fix price), $16 if you include tip. Several things that ticked me off were…
- The chef- He was sarcastic although he probably thought he was funny. I asked him if anything else went into the cheesecake besides Fromage and he made it sound as if I were asking him to commit a crime.
- The way everything is prepared- It looks clean, but if I’m paying $14 for dessert (but in actuality worth half its value at most), I don’t want to see your primative ways of preparing it. In this case, I think that having an open kitchen is actually a detriment.
- Put a damn sign on your door! They have 2 ChikaLicious spots, right across from each other. The one with the sign sells dessert A La Carte (cupcakes, sundaes, etc…) and the plain building across from it offers the pre-fix.
Spare yourself the wait and the wallet. Go to Max Brenner or something for godsakes.
