Coconut Grove- finally a cheap Indian restaurant on Curry Hill

by Jessie on September 18, 2009

This place literally doesn’t exist anywhere on the internet. Yun and I randomly stumbled upon this South Indian Restaurant when we were walking along “Curry Hill” and really really wanted some Indian food. Some of the restaurants around this area are really expensive and this was one of the few on the cheap end.

They give you two deals for their entrees. You can get the entree with Basmati rice and with the lamb entrees, that comes out to around $8.95. The other option is getting it with Thali.

Thali is a selection of small dishes served on a round tray. I have no idea what was in the Thali or the names of the small dishes but there was one with chickpeas that was really good! I wasn’t a fan of the yogurt or the rice pudding dessert. The yogurt was overly tart and the rice pudding was too sweet and creamy. But I’ve never liked Indian yogurt or sweets (as well as rice pudding), so I might be a bit biased here.

You also get roti and papadam, which is great because the portion of rice wasn’t enough (or for me, at least). The entree with the Thali was only $12.95! If you go to some Indian restaurants in Murray Hill, they’ll charge you like $3 for the roti alone. Ridiculous, I know.

I ordered the Lamb Masala, which was rich and flavorful. Yun got the Lamb Curry, which was a bit thinner being curry and all. But both dishes come highly recommended if you’re a lamb fan. Don’t let the portion sizes fool you. There was a good amount of lamb in the dish and with the rest of the Thali, it’s a very filling meal.

The roti wasn’t anything special, but it brought back good memories of London. Yum…

And that’s papadam. Let me know if I’m mistaken?

We went on a Sunday night and surprisingly, it was actually somewhat  full! The place is pretty small, so when the crowd starts to dwindle away, it can get a bit awkward being the only guests and all… But I’d come back again. The food was great, the service was outstanding, and the prices were friendly.

Hi Jessie,
How are you? I might just try this place. I have not been to this neighborhood for soooo long. Used to go there almost everyday.

Take care,
Mery

Nice Post. I love those pictures. And, that looks like North Indian Food to me! Or, maybe I’m just a really bad Indian and can’t tell.

Haha Sugar, you are a bad Indian indeed. Or maybe the restaurant owners are cause the banner says “South Indian.”

But honestly, I’m just as clueless as the next non-Indian!
