Wee Taster Flights- 5 Draughts of your choice

Try this if you want to entertain yourself. Order the Wee Taster Flights, a sampler of 5 draughts (drafts) of your choice at 8oz. per glass. Then, take a seat outside and wait. Engage in conversation while slowly tasting the beer. Discreetly count how many heads turn to do a double take as they look at this strange wooden apparatus that holds a colorful array of beer. We lost count after awhile…

Serving over 200 beers, The Half Pint is the sister restaurant of Stout and Maggie’s Place. My boss would take us here in the summer and being so close to NYU and all, I actually never knew of its existence! So when I came for the first time and discovered that they carried cider, I was ecstatic. Ciders such as Strongbow and Magner’s are popular in the UK and Australia. They actually carry a higher alcohol content for anyone who thinks that ciders are for wusses.

Neha and I decided to split the sampler. It’s actually cheaper since you get 40 oz in total, and a normal 16 oz is anywhere from $6 – 8. With the help from the waitress (who was super friendly and always checked back on us every so often during the 1.5 hours that we were there), we got the:

  • Bluepoint Blueberry (New York): A wonderful blend of fresh blueberries matched with a thirst quenching distinctive ale.
    • Yeah, it was definitely a blueberry explosion. You can actually smell it! I liked it, and it wasn’t overly fruity or anything, just tones of blueberry.
  • Lagunitas IP (California): Slightly sweet with a dry finish. Good Hops
    • NOT good hops. But I guess it depends on your taste. Neha loved it, although at first she was like, “What the heck is this?!” It’s not sweet in the traditional sense. I can’t even explain it. I guess it’s the bitterness from the hops that I’m so averse to.
  • Magic Hat #9 (Vermont): Crisp and fruity with a mild apricot finish
    • This is what I would deem the “safe beer.” It wasn’t a particular favorite, but it was refreshing and yes, did indeed carry an apricot finish. I’d order it again if I saw it at another restaurant with a shorter list of beers.
  • Youngs Double Chocolate Stout (UK): Heavenly smooth with a silky chocolate flavor. Medium bodied and super duper creamy
    • It’s like Guinness, but with a chocolate espresso flavor. Definitely very unique and I loved how smooth the head was. I don’t think that I’d be able to drink a whole pint due to the creaminess.
  • Hoegaarden Witbier [White Beer] (Belgium)
    • Favorite of the night! Should have gotten all Belgian beers. It’s delightfully light and perfect for a cool summer night.

Last but not least, if you get their beer, you obviously need some good grub to go along with it. I recommend the sliders. The chicken sliders are great if you like a crispy chicken slider with ranch dressing, but go with the beef if you like cheese and a sweet sauce. Other recommendations include the Country Butter Chicken Fingers and Buffalo Wings. Don’t get the Nachos. It’s a pile of mushy slippery mess.

On the whole, The Half Pint is a hip restaurant with great beer at decent prices, good food, friendly servers, and an amazing atmosphere!
