I’ve always wanted to drive down State Rt 1 (Pacific Coastal Highway). I arrived at SFO a weekend ahead of a client meeting. Right after landing, I rented a car and jetted down south. I had alot of things on my mind so I wanted to just drive, drive, and drive with no destination in sight. Talia had suggested I check out Big Sur and I figured I’d drive there or until sunset. I’m not the type who typically “wings” it. This drive was so liberating. It was 70 degrees and with the windows down and the music cranking beyond loud, I drove until something tickled my fancy. Man, I wished I had Californication on my phone.
I stopped a couple of times- I spotted a taqueria, spied an organic strawberry picking field, and then signs for 5lb for $1 navel oranges. It was hard not to get distracted by the many things State Rt. 1 had to offer. Alas, Big Sur was too far away but, I ended up at Carmel by the Sea in Monterey where I then hopped on the 17 mile scenic drive. As the sun was setting, I gathered my running shoes and ran down the coast for the last hurrah. I spent the way back driving in darkness before I landed upon another taqueria in Santa Cruz. The day after, Esther took me around SF to Lands End, Twin Peaks, and some good eats. Scroll to the end for the places and recos.
Thanks California for the much needed break. I’ll see you in June.

Cheap booze but too much shredded lettuce on the tacos

A super cute little farm where everything goes by the honor system. You pick your own strawberries, weigh them and pay in this little cash till. Plus free and unlimited jam tastings with animal crackers!

Latte a tad bit overpriced and underwhelming compared to NYC shops

Michelin Star restaurant, Moroccan inspired food. Am I a food snob? I was a bit underwhelmed. $22 cous cous was the best dish. Skip the short ribs, fish, and chicken wings. NYC has got me spoiled.
