Chihuahua: bacon wrapped dog covered with avocadoes and sour cream. don’t be scared ($4.50)

A few weeks ago, the day after Christmas, Mark and I headed into the city to meet my awesome Australian friend Adam. I felt a bit awkward suggesting we meet up at Crif Dogs, given that I was proposing we eat a glorified tube of encased meat on a potato bun for lunch, but he was totally fine with it. (I had a Groupon, of course). Luckily, I proposed noon and nothing earlier because Crif Dogs opens exactly at noon. And exactly at noon on that particular Monday, all the seats (roughly 5 tables + a bar) promptly filled up.

Good Morning: a bacon wrapped dog smothered with melted cheese and a fried egg ($5.00)

Since it was already jammed packed, our orders took awhile to get to us (maybe 15 minutes)? The boys each ordered two dogs, I one, and together we got three Pap’s Pabst (Mark: “go to your blog right now and fix PAP’s blue ribbon… ITS PABST BLUE RIBBON! I DON’T WANT TO DRINK A PAP!!!”) Blue Ribbons (unflavorfully American, as Adam remarked) as well as a large order of waffle fries loaded with cheese.

Morning Jersey: taylor ham wrapped house dog with melted cheese and a fried egg ($5.00)

The three of us ordered some type of breakfast dog- Good Morning or Morning Jersey, the only difference being bacon versus Taylor ham. Both of them came with a fried egg and some good ol’ American cheese. Let me tell you. That dog was righteous. I never knew a hot dog could taste so freakin’ good. It’s the fried egg I tell you.

Spicy Redneck: a house dog, bacon wrapped, with chili, cole slaw, and jalapenos, did somebody say backyard wrestling? ($4.75)

When Mark’s spicy redneck came out, I looked at him hesitantly. If there’s one thing he hates, it’s mayo and anything that resembles mayo. Cole slaw would qualify for that camp. That thing was LOADED with cole slaw, to the point where everything else was completely buried. One bite in, no answer. Two bites in, Mark says, “Hmm… interesting.” INTERESTING?! That’s all I get out of the guy for a hot dog loaded with spicy chili and coleslaw? Eventually he admitted that the cole slaw wasn’t so bad and he could see the reason for it being on the dog (so that he could eat the hot dog in peace without tearing up). However, he noted that next time, he’d just get two of his Jersey Mornings.

Adam’s second dog was a Chihuahua (photo above, first one in the post), which sounds particularly nasty. I mean, bacon, avocado, and sour cream? But yours truly tried the Chihuahua on a very late night after visiting a particular nearby Japanese neighbor that offers cotton candy after your meal (hmm I wonder who that can be?) and it was fantastic! The best thing about all of these bacon wrapped dogs is that the bacon literally becomes one with the dog. The fat from the bacon welds itself onto the hot dog and transform the hot dog into what seems to be a blast of bacon-ness. The crunch also helps.

Large Cheese Fries ($4.00)

Not going to lie- the waffle friess + cheese are a bit disappointing as the cheese seemed to be cheese whiz. Then again, for $4, what should I expect? I’d hold off on the fries and either get an extra hot dog or perhaps the tator tots.

But yeah, a must try for all hot dog lovers out there! Warning: The meal does not come cheap. The Groupon, which I purchased for $10 and offered $20 worth of food, was insufficient to say the least. I had to shell out another $17 something, which means our hot dog meal came out to a whopping $37+ meal. Oy!

There are a few reasons why it’s so difficult to snag a reservation at Locanda Verde during both brunch and dinner. Due to a bit of mis-communication, I called to reserve a two-top on Friday afternoon for Saturday brunch. The only times they had left were for 10:30am and 1:30pm. So, we settled for the 1:30pm time slot (I had requested a noon reservation).

First, Locanda Verde is operated by none other than Robert De Niro (as well as Ira Drukier and Richard Born of Greenwich Hotel). He’s invested in roughly 25 restaurants around the world (check out his interview with NYMAG). Then, there’s the chef, Andrew Carmellini. Now here’s an impressive resume- He started off as a sous chef at Le Cirque and eventually became a protege of the famous Daniel Boulud where he became the chef de cuisine at Cafe Boulud. He eventually opened A Voce, earning a Michelin Star. Now, he’s the chef and partner at both Locanda Verde and The Dutch.

Given all that, I’m surprised we snagged a reservation at all considering the last minute planning… And even when we entered at 1pm, we overheard the hostess telling a stray couple that they’d have to wait 45 min for a table. It wasn’t until we were leaving around 3pm that the place began to somewhat clear up.

Soft Scrambled Farm Egg Crostino with leeks, mushrooms and speck ($17)

Clearly, this was a highly anticipated brunch and I had nothing but high expectations. Leaving, I had mixed emotions about this place. Part of it was my fault- I should have ordered a pasta dish. After all, Carmellini is known for his pasta making skills. Instead, I went with a recommendation from the server and got a very traditional brunch dish- soft scrambled farm egg crostino.

Crostino is a thin piece of crisp toast. The crostino that came in this dish was seriously the size of my fist and sliced under an inch. A bit underwhelming, to say the least. When the dish first came out, my heart dropped. I felt cheated. Here it was- simple scrambled eggs on toast with sides that could be easily replicated elsewhere.

But as I ate, I began to taste the complexities that emerged from such a simple looking dish. First, the scrambled eggs were unlike anything I’ve ever had. Whereas most scrambled eggs are a bit hard and mildly rubbery, these scrambled eggs were like floating puffs of clouds. It reminded me of the time I had tried out Gordon Ramsey’s recipe for scrambled eggs. I remember being appalled at how they turned out- they were slightly runny and completely loose. But that’s apparently how the French do it. It’s just different from the traditional American scrambled eggs, and something that I’m not quite used to. Still, these were delicious.

There’s not much to say about the salad, but the prosciutto was perfectly salted.

Linguine with Clams (~$22 [?, not featured on online menu])

Sabrina ended up getting the linguine with clams, which looked absolutely mouthwatering. I’m not a big fan of clams, so I had a bit of the pasta by itself. To sum it up in two words, it was OVERLY SALTY. Salty to the point where I couldn’t taste the sauce. At least the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente.

Despite the saltiness, Sabrina thought it was still tasty. They were quite generous with the clams at least.

Crispy Garlic Potatoes ($7)

Amongst all of the dishes, the best was a tie between the crispy garlic potatoes and dessert. Before you write off potatoes, let me just say that these were PHENOMENAL. Holy crap. The best potatoes I ever had! They were actually completely crispy on the outside and the inside was super soft. There’s a ton of crushed and slightly burnt garlic which were equally as delicious. I definitely recommend getting these as a side.

I am thinking of potatoes here…

Coconut Semifreddo: mango sorbetto, mint, and lime ($10)

This was one of the top most intricate and delicious desserts I’ve had. By intricate, I mean the pairing of flavors. The only other dessert I’ve had that’s come close to this is at Pichet Ong’s Spot Dessert Bar, where basil ice cream was paired with olive oil cake and white miso semifreddo.

This dessert was executed very well. The mango sorbet was actually subtle compared to the coconut semifreddo (semifreddo is a lighter version of ice cream and made by combining whipped cream and ice cream). What I loved about the semifreddo was the bits of chunky coconut inside the semifreddo. By itself, the semifreddo was a bit too sweet but with the mango sorbet, it was just right. The mint, in the form of a syrup like drizzle, was a refreshing contrast.

I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture of their bread because it was super good. There was cheese and butter melted into the bread, which made for a light and airy yet toasted and very flavorful bread.

Overall, it was a decent experience, though slightly disappointing (partially because of all the buzz around the restaurant). Still, the next stop is The Dutch, and hopefully I’ll remember to order something less typical…

Let’s rewind back to #5.

Bobo is tucked on an awkward corner in Greenwich Village. If you weren’t looking for it, you most certainly would miss it. That’s because there’s a tiny purple sign with a menu and… yeah. Nothing else.

To get into Bobo, you descend concrete stairs into what seems like an underground tomb (actually, it’s called “The Den” and you can get drinks/light food there). Then, the hostesses will send you up your merry way through a flight of stairs into the dining room.

The bobo: Prosecco, aperol, solerno, orange ($13)

Our reservation was for 6pm and we arrived a few minutes early. I think they were still setting up the dining room, so we lingered around the bar. There, the barman pressured us into getting drinks. Fine, there was no pressure but if you were sitting on a bar stool and the bartender asks, “Ladies, have you decided what you’d like?” wouldn’t you feel compelled to get a drink? However, he was super nice and explained the different ingredients that went into the drinks.

Of course, I couldn’t resist THE BOBO. Surprisingly, it’s a bit bitter with laces of citrus and tons of bubbly (from the Prosecco). Sabrina settled for a margarita, which literally had two and a half shots of rum so don’t be fooled by the small size of the glass. She needed help to consume it all.

Just to note- The Den itself is quite cozy and epitomizes the very scene in your head when you imagine walking through New York City and peering through a restaurant window and watching girls dine and laugh away.

Upstairs, the dining room is uncoordinatedly majestic. Chairs don’t match, frames are unleveled, but there is a sense of refinement and if I daresay, subtle baroqueness. I know, that’s an oxy moron.

Crispy Duck: Stone Church leg, swiss chard, chiles, radishes, cilantro ($16)

We contemplated getting the Dinner Party, which is a four course meal for $60. The only issue was, even the server didn’t know what the heck was being served that night. Seeing as how Sabrina is such a picky eater (fine, I confess I have some flaws too in this arena), we chose to order a-la-carte.

For the appetizer, we got the Crispy Duck. They should have labeled it as Crispy Duck SALAD because that’s just what it was. Duck dumped over a salad. The presentation really could have used some fine tuning. Someone seemed like they were in a rush plating.

Despite that, the dish was impeccable. The duck skin was so crisp and the meat was tender. The salad itself was wonderfully seasoned. We appreciated the touches of cherries in the salad. Man, that was deeelish.

Stone Church Duck Breast: date, hazelnuts, parsnips, chorizo ($32)

Sabrina carried her obsession with duck onto the entree.

This I tell you, was possibly the best choice Sabrina has ever made in her life, second to choosing to sign up for that fateful summer dorm that placed her in my grace and presence.

A whopping $32 you say? Completely worth it. This is a gastronomical masterpiece. Listen to this-

Dates pureed= sweetness

Chorizo bits = spiciness

Perfectly cooked duck breast = saltiness

Together = amazingness.

It’s a very difficult dish to describe because the flavors all hit you from different sides within your mouth. I would never have thought dates would work so well, but whaddya know, it does. And then the parsnips? They’re like a very mellow form sour potatoes and both of us went back and forth figuring out what it was under I finally mustered the guts to ask the server.

Don’t tell me you’re surprised I ordered the burger.

For $17, it is only most fitting that I compare this to The Spotted Pig’s famous $17 burger. All I have to say is.

Bobo burger > Spotted Pig burger.

Several scientific discoveries have led me to this conclusion with the most important being taste. IT WAS PERFECT! The burger I had at Spotted Pig was ridiculously salty.

Now, to be fair, this burger had some gruyere cheese whereas the other did not. It also had some fried onions and leeks, but note that there’s no sauce. This makes it a somewhat comparable match in my view.

Both burgers sit on a brioche bun, but the Bobo burger’s bun is delicately soft and buttery. This does have its cons as the juice from the burger quickly seeps into the bottom bun making it somewhat soggy.

But overall, the Bobo burger wins, hands-down. The contrast in texture between the softness of the bun/meat and the fried onions/leek seals the deal.

Not to mention, the fries at Bobo win handily. I didn’t even have to use ketchup. That’s rare.

Our meal at Bobo was spectacular. However, some things to note- service was great but flawed. The runner accidentally gave our appetizer to the other table but luckily, one of the servers redeemed the restaurant by joking, “Sorry about your food. That runner has been fired.” The restaurant also seemed a bit uncoordinated as we had two servers to greet us (not that I’m complaining about the extra attention). And last but not least, just bring out a damn bread BASKET instead of serving it by the slice. For what we paid ($115 including tip), I’m sure you can afford a few extra slices and a handwoven basket.

We eventually were seated at the very end by the wall

A couple of weeks ago, I figured I would utilize my New York Road Runners membership. After all, I paid $40. But let me explain- I didn’t spontaneously decide to join the running club. Jerry kept bugging me to sign up for the New York Half Marathon, which was like a whopping $120. With a membership, it’d get reduced to $100, so I thought why not? Jerry explained that you’d have to be very unlucky to not get selected for the race. Lo and behold, I get this email saying…

Jessie,

We’re sorry that your name was not selected in the lottery for this year’s NYC Half-Marathon, and we’d like to offer a special courtesy to you, a loyal NYC-area runner: a refund of your $5 application fee.

THANK GOD. If I had to run 13.2 miles, I would have died.

But… $5 refund?! What about my $40 membership refund? No go there. Apparently that’s non-refundable. So, that’s when I decided to sign up for the Scotland 10k. Now, why did I pick the 10k? It was only $18 for members. Compare that to the 4-mile run next weekend, which was also $18. I figured, I’d get more bang for my buck from a mileage perspective.

A mere 6.2 miles, I thought. I had alot of time to train. Then, it dawned upon me that it was in 13 days. Then I got the flu. In other words, there was no training involved.

I expected failure. I expected something like a 11 minute mile. As I’m running and passing each mile mark, I’m trying to calculate my time. I’m thinking to myself, “Wait did I just run the first mile in roughly 9 minutes? No, I had to have calculated wrong.” So I convinced myself throughout the race that I was running super slow and that I couldn’t add.

However, when the results came out, I finished in 1:00:10. That means…

A 9:44 MILE! Some of you may scoff, some of you may even be impressed. But on this rare occasion, I was actually happy! (This typically never happens with my race results)

To celebrate, I happily re-consumed all 600+ calories at Mesa Grill with Sabrina.

We arrived at Mesa Grill at around 12:15pm. The reservation was for 12:30 but we were seated pretty quickly. It took a bit of haggling to change our seats and the host wanted to seat us at the very edge of the stairs right by the door despite there being a whole row of seats. The host first said that he couldn’t change our seat because he was expecting a big party. Sabrina worked her magic and viola! We not only got a better table, but it had better lighting! Later the “big group” came and it was only a four-top. He made us think he needed to piece three tables together for a six-top. Host fail.

Complimentary Bread Selection: Coffee Cake, Cheddar PopOver, Fruit Scone, Jalapeno Cornmuffin

The host may have failed, but the bread didn’t. I think every Bobby Flay restaurant serves an in-house combination of their sweet and savory breads. (See Bar Americain) The best was by far the coffee cake, which was super moist. The second best was the cheddar popover. The fruit scone was a bit on the dry side, but Sabrina really liked it. The jalapeno cornmuffin was a bit of an anomaly. First off, what a weird combination. But second, it was multi-colored- half yellow and half gray with specs of corn. This was also a bit dry, but interesting.

One word of advice- Don’t eat too much. It fills you right up.

Second word of advice- Don’t order two appetizers and two entrees (this was Sabrina’s idea, and she calls me Piggie?!?!)

Crispy Bacon + Hashbrown Quesadilla with Fried Egg and Spicy Tomato Salsa ($11)

This was my first pick but seeing as Sabrina doesn’t like cheese, I was willing to settle on another appetizer. However, Sabs insisted that we get both. Boy am I glad we did that. This blew the roof of my mouth off. I mean, bacon + hashbrown + fried egg? Holy mackeroles.

Okay, I admit it. This is a glorified quesadilla. I mean, what quesadilla isn’t delicious? But the presentation on this carried it over the top. And the fried egg is a stroke of genius. I think they overcooked the egg as it didn’t run. This would have been the one time when I would have loved to have that runny yolk soak into the tortilla. Either way, it was delicious all the same. Considering how quesadillas at franchises such as Qdoba will set you back around $8, this really isn’t over priced at all. The only complaint I have is that it was just slightly over-salted. Still, hands-down the best dish of brunch.

See all that cheese? And more cheese?! I was in cheese heaven.

Rough Cut Tuna Nachos with Mango-Habanero Hot Sauce, Avocado Crema ($11)

This was my second pick. I expected something, uh, less elegant. In other words, scattered tuna tartare on tortilla chips. This just looked like a lump of brain mass. Whoever came up with this presentation should be fired, but if he came up with the quesadilla presentation then he’s redeemed.

Luckily, the tuna is easy to de-clump. Fork and knife!

How did it taste? It was way mellow by comparison to the quesadilla, but in a good way. The sauces provided an interesting contrast. The avocado crema didn’t do much for me, but I really enjoyed the Mango-Habanero hot sauce. I probably wouldn’t order this again, but for $11, it’s also on the cheap side considering you’re getting raw tuna. I’d recommend this if you’re looking for something light and refreshing but if you’re expecting it to blow your socks off, pass and order the quesadilla.

Just in case you forgot what the quesadilla looked like…

Mesa Burger with Double Cheddar Cheese, Grilled Vidalia Onion and Horseradish Mustard on a House Roll + Southwestern Fries ($15)

Now, onto the entrees.

Third word of caution: When ordering two appetizers, split the entree.

The burger was ridiculously big. It was giant. In fact, it was the size of my head.

Unfortunately, it didn’t taste as good as it looked.

I ordered it medium rare. When it came, it was barely even medium, meaning they overcooked it to the point where it was almost well done. Good bye juice. What bothered me more however, was lack of flavor. I had to season it with ketchup, which is a BIG NO especially if I (or in the case Sabrina) have to pay $15 for it. The meat could have used a bit more salt. It felt like a burger that I could have gotten at a diner, but presented better. And it wasn’t just me. The guy who sat next to us only ate half of his burger too and no, he didn’t have any appetizers either.

The bun also bothered me. It was super dry and a bit over toasted. So by the end, I threw off half of it and ate it with one bun.

This was perhaps among the more disappointing burgers I’ve had.

Both the burger and the sandwich come with these amazingly seasoned “Southern” fries. They were soft!

Sabrina’s pressed roasted pork sandwich, however, was bangin’ delicious. It was moist and flavorful. The ciabatta bread was also amazing. I was a big fan of the ancho mayo they used (surprisingly). Definitely get the sandwich over the burger. Too bad we ordered the two appetizers because we could nearly finish either of them.

Both of us loved the way the ketchup and mustard were presented- in shot glasses! Props there.

Look at that perfection!

This is what Sabrina’s plate looked like after. She touched like two fries. What a shame. Years ago, we would have completely polished everything off. I barely touched my fries either and felt so guilty for wasting all that food. Brunch was at 12:30pm. Nine hours later, I’m still ridiculously full.

Thumbs down to the burger, but thumbs up to the overall dining experience and price.

What do you call a cow without legs?

Ground Beef!

I love those kind of jokes. If you’ve got any, send them my way.

Anyway, this past Saturday, I met up with some friends at Five Napkin Burger. What a weird name. Apparently their burgers are too dangerously juicy for just one napkin. Well, why not call it Ten Napkin? It’s missing an ‘s’ too. Either way, the burger definitely wasn’t juicy enough to soak the surface of even one napkin, but it was still delicious all the same. And I say this with a damn serious face. Others at the table will tell you that it’s the hard cider talking, but I tell you.

That burger was damn delicious. And those onion rings? Ohhh mother. I feel my knees trembling.

Stack Of Cornmeal Crusted Onion Rings ($7.25)

To rewind, we met up at 12:30 for brunch. Amit was late, which upon hindsight, was a great thing. Somehow the manager thought we were waiting forever for a table (but we were only waiting for Amit) so he comped us THREE appetizers! Sam was giving his order to the waitress- “Um… I’d like some onion rings” [BOOM, onion rings appear!]. And we all know that in his head he was thinking about the Spinach Artichoke Dip and Pork Taquitos because he did ask whether we’d be interested. Then somehow the other two magically appeared. We were so confused until the runner said, “COMPLIMENTARY!”

A bit of background on Five Napkin. The owners originally opened Nice Matin on the Upper West Side where they featured the “5 napkin burger” (named after its juiciness, of course). Apparently it was so popular that they started a new restaurant and named it after that burger. I feel so… unworthy now. Nobody would ever do that for me.

The place serves a ton of beers (totaling 50 for bottles and draft, of which I believe I saw six-ish?), 100 wines, and 10 specialty cocktails. It’s a bit classier than their stated “casual” and it’s probably because of the location.

The pricing is… eh. It’s a splurge considering you’re eating burgers. The appetizers aren’t that impressive. I mean, the spinach artichoke dip was really delicious but they only give you like 5 pieces of the bread crostini which in other words, is left over bread from the night before glamorized in a toaster oven. At least they do give you a few Belgian Endives but unless if you like the bitter leaves, they’re only there for garnish.

Hot Spinach & Artichoke Dip endive spears & french bread crostini ($10.75)

Pork Taquitos queso fresco, sour cream & salsa ($8.75)

I could have cared less for the pork taquitos (they were cold!) but the onion rings were fantastic. However, I have yet to have met an onion ring that has been sub par to my expectations. Onion, meet egg wash. Egg wash, meet cornmeal. Cornmeal, meet oil. It’s a match made in heaven.

Before you come here, do your homework. There are like eight different burger options to choose from and unless if you have something against bacon, cheese, or caramelized onions you’re going to have a tough time choosing. Eventually I settled with the “Original Five Napkin.” Surprisingly, I was the only one despite this being their signature burger.

So looking back, I think to myself, dang, a $14.95 burger is pretty darn expensive. But then I think about how delicious it tasted. When the burger arrived, my jaw dropped. THERE WAS SO MUCH CHEESE! Then I take a bite. Hm… It’s so creamy. Wait- that’s not cheese… that’s… aioli?!?! You’d think I would have been disgusted but it was just so delicious. I ordered my burger medium rare and it came slightly pink. The burger was just juicy enough and surprisingly, it didn’t soak up the bun at all. But the caramelized onions. That was what did it. And then the gruyere cheese. I have to stop thinking about this right now.

The thing was too big for me to finish. So I packed half of it away. The next day, I heated it up for lunch and THE BREAD STILL WASN’T SOGGY!!

By the way, aioli is a mixture of garlic and olive oil, but in this case, it resembled a runnier version of mayo.

Now the fries. They give you a decent amount. If you aren’t a fan of soft shoe string fries, this isn’t your cup of tea. Me? I love that. However, it could have done well with less salt.

Italian Turkey Burger melted mozzarella, spicy tomato sauce, vinegar peppers, sesame egg roll ($12.95)

5 Napkin Veggie Burger housemade with 5n sauce, b&b pickles, lettuce & tomato, multi grain roll ($11.95)

Looks less glamorous upon assembling.

Buffalo Chicken Sandwich hot sauce, creamy roquefort dressing, tomatoes & bacon ($12.95)

Brunch wouldn’t be brunch without dessert. We ended up splitting their Espresso Brownie Sundae six ways, which equates to roughly 3 spoonfuls each, with the 1st spoon being whipped cream, the 2nd ice cream and the 3rd brownie. But in all seriousness, this is worth the $7.50. The salted peanuts? Oh man, heavenly!!

Espresso Brownie Sundae vanilla ice cream, espresso caramel, whipped cream & salted peanuts ($7.50)

There aren’t many places that I’d come back to, but this is one of them, and it’s not because the manager comped us. The ambiance is great; there are tons of windows and the selection of draft beer is a gigantic plus. Any place that can serve a burger without making the bun soggy has reeled in my stomach.
